L4 to L3: Building on Lessons Learned to Bring Self-Driving to Consumer Vehicles

In early 2023, Latitude AI was formed as a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company to develop L3 hands-free, eyes-off automated driving technology for next-generation Ford vehicles. Many of Latitude’s team of experts are veterans of Argo AI, and are now applying the experience gained from developing L4 autonomous platforms to an L3 consumer product. Greydon Foil, former lead for Argo’s Prediction team and now Latitude’s Autonomy Behavior team lead, will discuss the differences between developing L4 and L3 technology, lessons learned while pursuing L4 autonomy for commercial fleets, and how the team is applying these lessons to consumer vehicles at Latitude.

Dr. Foil is the Director of Autonomy Behavior at Latitude AI, a Ford-owned subsidiary focused on bringing L3 autonomous driving to Ford consumer vehicles. Prior to Latitude AI, he led the Prediction team at Argo AI working on L4 autonomy, worked on ML systems validation at Edge Case Research, and developed off-road L4 vehicles at Mesh Robotics. He holds a PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University focused on statistical sampling techniques for planetary robotics.
