The AI Revolution and its Impact on Weather and Climate Prediction and Hazard Mitigation

We are in the middle of a revolution in the use of AI for weather and climate prediction, enabled by the combination of huge volumes of data, enormous computational capabilities, rapid development of new AI methods and a growing pool of experts who know how to use these ingredients.  National and private weather services around the world, as well as scientists in academia and industry, are applying new AI methods to push the frontiers of what’s possible. This talk will provide an overview of some of the exciting new applications of AI to weather and climate prediction and how AI is being used to understand and manage hazards associated with climate change.

Dr. Ilene Carpenter manages HPE’s business in the Earth Sciences. She works closely with HPE’s global sales organization, our performance team and our customers to understand requirements in this segment and with HPE’s HPC product management team to ensure that HPE’s products have the features needed to meet these requirements. Ilene began her career at Cray Research in 1992 as a computational chemist and then worked in the environmental application groups at both SGI and Cray Inc.  She was business development manager for the weather segment at SGI Federal and then managed SGI’s benchmarking team. Ilene rejoined Cray in 2018 after spending 9 years as a computational scientist first at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and then at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and continues this role at HPE.
